Discover Beadnell

The Harbour

Beadnell village is set at the end of a glorious stretch of beach known as Beadnell Bay, in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.  Its harbour is one of the most popular tourist destinations on the north east coast, and was constructed in the 18th Century to accompany the limekilns in the which are now protected by the National Trust.

The Bay

History

The harbour is unique as it is the only west facing harbour on the East Coast, making it an enchanting place to watch the sun set. In the summer it is filled with colourful boats, some of which bring wild salmon, crabs and lobsters to be served in local restaurants.  Fishing has taken place in Beadnell since the 14th Century, originally using local flat bottomed fishing boats called 'cobles' which landed in sheltered inlets around Beadnell.

The beautiful sands of Beadnell Bay are within walking distance of the apartment and there are an extensive range of water sports, including sea kayaking, kite surfing and scuba diving readily available.

Nature

The area is also rich in nature and wildlife, with two local nature reserves nearby.  Beadnell Bay hosts the largest mainland colony of Little Terns in the UK.

The village has significant historical interest as well; a recently discovered Bronze Age burial chamber suggests that the village may have been inhabited for several thousand years.  The local pub incorporates the remains of a 16th Century pele tower - a defensive watch tower with a beacon on top to warn of raids from Scottish raiding parties.
